Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a translator and an interpreter?
While the terms translator and interpreter are often used interchangeably, there is an important difference between the two professions. Interpreters translate spoken language orally and translators translate written word. Both require deep cultural and linguistic understanding and the ability to communicate clearly.
Which languages & areas do we serve?
Volentia offers healthcare interpretation in Mandarin, Korean, Punjabi, and Hindi. We currently serves all areas in Greater Vancouver, including the City of Vancouver, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Richmond, and Surrey. As we grow our team, we hope to increase our language availability and expand our interpretation service to other cities in British Columbia.
Are our services completely free?
Yes! We pride ourselves on being non-profit and entirely student-run.
Who are our medical interpreters?
Our interpreters comprise a group of passionate undergraduate and graduate students with diverse educational backgrounds. Many are currently pursuing healthcare-related degrees such as biology, chemistry, kinesiology, and psychology. Our interpreters possess fluent or full professional proficiency in their second language. All applicants are all required to pass a Criminal Record Check, complete a healthcare ethics certification, and complete rigorous screening and training.
How can I apply to be an interpreter?
We have just finished our second hiring round and all positions have been filled at the moment. New opportunities will be posted on UBC Careers. Please regularly check the UBC Careers Online webpage for open positions.
